Feel the Antic Spirit By Visiting Izmir
The history of the Turkish city of Izmir is more than 4,000 years old. The city was built by the ancient Aeolian Greeks. Until now, Izmir and its surroundings are saturated with a special spirit of freedom and creativity, and many attractions keep the memory of ancient times. To feel the rhythm of such an old, but the modern renovated city, walking along its streets, visit the following attractions, which we will describe in this article.
Göztepe
Another embankment of Izmir. Smaller, quieter, and therefore more comfortable than Cordon. If the rhythm of the big city has completely captured you, come to this clean coast to take a break.
Konak
It is one of the oldest districts in Izmir, and its main attraction, the Clock Tower (Saat kulesi), is perhaps the most recognizable symbol of Izmir. The clock tower was erected on the square in 1901 so that everyone could find out what time it is now because at that time a wristwatch was very expensive. During its entire existence, the clock stopped only once, due to an earthquake.
Kemeralti
Big bazaar. Residents of Izmir assure that “you never saw the city if you were not in Kemeralti.” This historical place is an old bazaar, which is still working in full force. If you like the atmosphere of an oriental bazaar with its noise, din, aromas of street food and spices, then perhaps you will spend the whole day here.
Kızlarağası
Now it’s just part of the Grand Bazaar, but during the Ottoman Empire, it was a typical caravanserai. Now in this part of the bazaar, there are antique and jewellery shops. The Hisar Mosque, built between 1592 and 1598, rises right next to Kyzlaragasy. The mosque is a prime example of Ottoman Islamic architecture.
Asansör
Asansör is one of the oldest districts in Izmir. The old streets have perfectly preserved the atmosphere of the last century, and walking along with them you can feel like a hero of a black-and-white film. In this area, unobtrusive Greek-Turkish music is constantly played, and you can get to this area using the elevator (Asansera), which is located on a street called Dario Moreno.
Çeşme
Cesme is a small, but very famous for its beauty, village near Izmir. With its many flowers and artfully laid out paving slabs, Çeşme is a great place to walk, even in winter.
Sirince
Sirince – This ancient mountain village is famous for its wine. Here you get a special feeling, walking along the old narrow streets, looking at the houses with white walls, admiring the typical Turkish peasant houses with balconies.
Cordon
Cordon. A wide embankment in the centre of the city stretches along the sea coast itself. Here you can, while walking slowly, watch the flight of seagulls, watch the pelicans swing on the waves, sometimes you can see the locals fishing. Numerous cafes and coastal restaurants are spread along the entire promenade.
Also, you can take a walk along the bay, or just take the ferry to find yourself in a completely different part of the city. It’s a beautiful city, definitely worth visiting. Get the ticket to Izmir by visiting the EasyJet website.
