What to Visit in Tallinn If You Stay for a Day?

There are situations when you are just passing through the city, and during this time you want to get to know it and see all of its brightest sights. If it so happens that you find yourself passing through the capital of Estonia, you will surely be interested to know what to see in Tallinn in one day. For this purpose, we have created this article.

Where to start?

If you have only one day left, you should immediately go to the Old Town. There is practically no transport here, so the walk will be exclusively on foot – put on comfortable shoes, there are cobblestones everywhere. The Old City itself is divided into the Lower City and the Upper City. Artisans lived in the first, and the nobility lived in the second, so outwardly these parts of the Old City differ from each other.

An indispensable attribute of any European city is the central square. In the case of Tallinn, this is the Town Hall Square, which is also located in the Old Town. During the Christmas and New Year holidays, a Christmas tree is installed here, and a fair is organized. This is the place where you should start your city tour if you are thinking about what to see in Tallinn in one day. By the way, here you can not only walk directly around the square but also visit the Town Hall itself. Excursions there operate, however, only in summer.

Where else you should go is the Ravel Fortress, which is located in the Upper Old City. It was built by the Germans back in the 13th century, and once all the power of Estonia was concentrated here. Today the local Parliament sits here, and you can come here for a short excursion. As part of the excursion, be sure to visit the Long Hermann Tower – a symbol not only of Tallinn but of the whole country. There is an observation deck at the top of the tower, which offers beautiful views of the city.

Another place from where you can look at Tallinn from above and take those same postcard photographs is Kohout’s viewpoint. The entrance is free, so you can come at any time and stay here as long as you need. Next to this site is another one – the Patkuli viewing platform, from which you can already see the Gulf of Finland and a little Tallinn.

What else to see?

You can be hungry both physically and spiritually. You will cope with the first hunger in the medieval inn “Dragon”. It is located in the building of the Town Hall itself and is notable for the fact that the menu contains the dishes that the locals ate in the Middle Ages: elk soup, wild boar, and elk pies. Interestingly, cutlery is not served in the tavern – you have to drink soup and eat everything else with your hands. The tavern is a real attraction in Tallinn and getting there is an event.

Also, visit the pharmacy museum, the marzipan museum in the Lower City, Church of the Holy Spirit, St. Catherine’s Lane is an authentic street with a bunch of workshops, souvenir shops, and colourful cafes.

All these bright points on the map of Tallinn are next to each other, because all this is the centre of the city, and, as we remember, you have only a day to walk around Tallinn. To get to this beautiful capital just visit the EasyJet website.
