Get to Know a Few Secrets to Take the Best Out of Your Home Internet

This also relates to your work Wi-Fi – too. The recommendations are equally applicable, but let’s start with the house. As a rule, for the home, we choose Internet tariffs from 100 Mbps and higher, but in reality, the actual speed is lower. Let’s say “working” 50-60 Mbps is the norm. But sometimes everything works very slowly.

Let’s see what is the reason and what can we do

Almost any router will slow down Wi-Fi speeds. The only question is how much. Depends on the power of the router, support for new standards, Wi-Fi settings in the device, provider (type of connection and speed according to the tariff), interference, signal strength, etc.

Consider the settings of the Wi-Fi router and clients.

Something that affects the speed of a wireless network. First of all, let’s check the settings on a home network with direct access to the equipment.

We proceed from the fact that the network device is located closer to the center of the apartment and not near household appliances.

Recommendations are as follows

Update the Wi-Fi wireless network adapter driver on your home PC or laptop.

Force the 802.11N standard – in practice, you will achieve a stable speed of 54-60 Mbps. If the mode is not supported, then specify 802.11G. Mixed mode 802.11B/G/N is not recommended, because the router drops the speed for all devices to the level of the slowest one during an active exchange on the network.

Enable the WMM function on the access point. Sometimes called differently: WMM, Multimedia environment, WMM Capable.

Check the network adapter properties in Windows Device Manager:

  • On the “Advanced” tab in the “Properties” window, find “802.11n direct connection mode” and set it to “Enable”.
  • Turn on the WMM function (if available, it may be called “Multimedia / Gaming environment”).

Manually select the freest channel in the 2.4 GHz band or use the network scanning option in the router and auto-switch (“Auto” / “AutoChannel”).

If the router supports a frequency of 5 GHz – use it, it is advisable to transfer clients with support for this range to it.

Change the transmitter power depending on the location of the access point: “normal” – when you are near devices, “high” – when you move, for example, walk around the apartment with a tablet and are removed from the access point.

Channel width in 20 MHz, 40 MHz, or 20/40 MHz (automatic selection) is an experimental parameter. Test the speed on devices in different modes and distances.

The security mode is preferable to WPA2 with AES encryption (rather than TKIP), choosing WEP or WPA with TKIP encryption will not exceed the 54 Mbps speed bar.

Download the official firmware from the hardware manufacturer’s website and update the firmware.

Thanks to these recommendations, the speed of wireless Internet in the apartment from a laptop, tablet, and smartphone is kept at 54-65 Mbps.

Here you go, enjoy your fast connection. Alternatively, if you don’t like your home or work provider, you may simply visit the Hyperoptic website and get the real deal!
